The movie, which will be National Award winning director, Srijit Mukherji’s debut Bollywood film, is a remake of his own Bengali film, Rajkahini. Begum Jaan has been in the news for quite some time because of its innovative script since the movie talks about the torture of women displaced in a brothel during the partition era. Though the release date of the movie had not been declared earlier, now the makers have announced that Begum Jaan will be released on the 6th of January 2017.

The movie will be produced by Play Entertainment and Mahesh Bhatt. Play Entertainment has earlier produced movies like Jai Gangaajal, starring Priyanka Chopra. While Vidya will be playing the lead role of the brothel madam, the supporting cast of the movie boasts of names like Naseeruddin Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Gauahar Khan, Pallavi Sharda, Ila Arun, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Chunky Pandey.

While the Bengali movie had Rituparna Sengupta playing the protagonist, this flick will see Vidya Balan stepping into her shoes. Hence they have chosen such an early date.

However, the movie had been facing a lot of troubles initially. Apparently, reports say that the production team of the film quit at a crucial time. The major reason behind this was the budget issues that the makers were facing, which eventually led them to cut corners. As per records, the crew did not want to compromise on the quality of the film and its brilliant script.
