The Independence Day weekend saw two much-anticipated movies locking horns at the box office. Akshay Kumar’s Rustom and Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro clashed at the ticket windows. The results clearly showed that Rustom emerged winner. In fact, in spite of entering its second week, the movie shows no signs of slowing down. 9 days after its release, Rustom has already entered the 100 crore club and has become Khiladi Kumar’s fastest grossing film till date!
Rustom Looking Forward To Break All Records Set By Akshay Kumar
In 2016, Akshay already has two films in the prestigious 100 crore club, namely Airlift and Housefull 3. In his acting lifetime, he already has 5 blockbuster hits that made it to the club. Till now, Singh Is Bliing was his fastest grossing film but Rustom has managed to break that record too. Though a number of fresh films released this weekend, like Happy Bhag Jayegi, Rustom has still managed to dominate the business, eating into the earnings of other films.
On the other hand, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo Daro looks like it is already out the race. While it initially earned around Rs 50 crore during the first weekend, its collections have dipped further in the second weekend. Looking by its box office performance, it is doubtful about how long the film would be able to sustain itself in the cinemas since it was made a very large scale. However, the movie is doing better in the international markets, as compared to the domestic markets.
An interesting fact is that while Rustom was made at a budget of Rs 50 crore, its competitor Mohenjo Daro has been made on a 100 crore budget that’s double that of Rustom’s. Akshay Kumar’s highest grossing film was Rowdy Rathore which had fetched him over Rs 130 crore. Rustom, which is expected to run for another few weeks at theatres worldwide, is already close to breaking the record. Only time will tell if it becomes Akki’s highest grossing film or not.
